Web 2.0 ProjectWho
the lesson is for:
French
II (mix of grade levels)
How long the lesson would take: Students will have a
week to work on their collages using ZohoShow.com. They will be presented by
the students using projector over 2 class periods at the beginning of the year
to serve as introductions to the class and review of last year's
vocabulary.
The web 2.0 site(s) that you would use: Possibly GoogleDocs as
well
A general description of the lesson activities: The students will be
introduced to the Zoho Show tool in class. We will need a projector hooked up
to the computer or better yet, a few laptop carts, so each student can access
the site and create a logon. We will have to create an example of what we
want the students to do. Students will be put into groups of 2 (partners).
Some of the students will already know each other, so it will be easier for
them. They will have to ask questions about each other in the target language
(monitoring required). We will provide a list of questions students can choose
from to help them learn what they want to to know about their partner. In the
list we will make sure to have vocabulary we want them to
remember in the question list. Possibly a warm-up activity will be good
for remembering these basic questions. Students can ask about favorite sports,
favorite subjects, their families, etc. We can work in stations after the
first day because there are more students than there are computers. Other
activities will be planned for the students at non-computer stations.
Students can continue
to learn about each other throughout the week. They can even use email,
instant messenger or GoogleDocs to communicate. They can also email the
teacher if they need help.
An indication of whether this would be a whole unit or part of a larger unit: This would be part of
a review unit at the very beginning of the year. Students will not be learning
any new vocabulary. They are refreshing their memories and getting back into
the habit of using the language.
The web 2.0 concepts addressed: This activity is
user-centered, yet requires collaboration. If the students are required to use
non-verbal modes of communicating, such as email, IM, or GoogleDocs, the
students would be collaborating that way as well. It also ues "the web as
a platform to build educational experiences."
The Ohio
benchmark(s):
At
the end of this lesson students will be able to ask questions and report what
they have learned in the target language.Since
the subject of the lesson is to learn what you can about your partner by
asking him question and then making a presentation about it. They will
be reviewing, which is assessing how well they achieved the
benchmark for the previous year, which is part of Benchmark A of the Ohio
Department of Education's Academic Content Standards for Foreign
Language:
Grade Nine1. Exchange information via letters, e-mail/video mail, notes, conversations or interviews on familiar topics (e.g., school events, weekend activities, memorable experiences, family life). The strategies that you would use to evaluate student learning: We can create a simple rubric with
one category that would be based on the final result. This is review, and it
is not meant to be a high-stakes activity. It is basically a participationscore because of this and
also because it is the first introduction to this type of technology in the
classroom, and it wouldn't be fair to grade it harshly.
Possible problems that you would anticipate using the web for this lesson: When dealing with this project we
need to consider the fluency level of the partners and thier ability to
use the technology necessary to complete the assignment. Also supervision
is necessary so students don't stray to irrelevant subjects. Another
issue to consider is how to handle the logins. Does each student get one? Does
the class get one as a whole, and if so, we have to consider that the other
projects would be viewable to other students. I don't know if there is an age
minimum for getting a username.
